7 in 10 Top Google Maps Businesses Are Never Named by ChatGPT or Gemini
Published
You can be in the Google Maps top 10 and still never hear your name from ChatGPT or Gemini. That is your AI search visibility. People ask those tools who to hire. The tool answers with a few names. If your name is missing, that customer does not see you there. In our Oct 2026 test of 12 AI answers per city and trade, most top Maps shops were left out.
What we tested
We looked at 11 cities and 8 trades. That is 88 pairs. Each pair got 6 questions. We sent them to ChatGPT and to Gemini. That is 12 answers per pair, and 1,056 answers in all. Every answer came back. Every question named the city and the state.
We also saved the Google Maps top 10 for that city and trade. A shop is not named when it is on that list, but none of the 12 answers say its name.
The main finding
70% of those 880 shops were never named. That is 7 in 10. In our Oct 2026 test of 12 AI answers per city and trade, most of the Maps top 10 never got a name.
The name match is automatic. It can miss a name. A looser match gives 61%. It counts more ways a name can match. The true number is likely 6 to 7 in 10. When a claim must be the safe one, we say 6 in 10.
Even the number 1 shop gets skipped
The Maps number 1 shop was not named 64% of the time. There were 88 of those shops, one per pair. The Maps top 3 were not named 66% of the time. In our Oct 2026 test of 12 AI answers per city and trade, the top of the Maps list was still skipped more often than not.
Good reviews help, but not enough
Shops with 4.5 stars or better and 100 or more reviews still got left out. There were 376 of them, and 51% were not named. In our Oct 2026 test of 12 AI answers per city and trade, good stars and lots of reviews were not enough. The looser match still left 45% of these shops not named.
Shops with 500 or more reviews were not named 33% of the time. There were 125 of them. More reviews helped.
The middle review count was about 297 for a shop that was named. It was about 57 for a shop that was not named. Both groups had a middle star score of 4.9.
The 11 cities
Each city has 80 shops from the Maps top 10. The second column is only shops with 4.5 stars or better and 100 or more reviews. The count is how many of those shops the city had. These numbers are from the same Oct 2026 test of 12 AI answers per city and trade.
| City | Not named | 4.5 stars and 100+ reviews, not named |
|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles, CA | 82% | 64% of 22 |
| Houston, TX | 81% | 62% of 29 |
| Phoenix, AZ | 79% | 58% of 31 |
| Dallas, TX | 76% | 71% of 38 |
| Atlanta, GA | 74% | 60% of 42 |
| San Diego, CA | 72% | 54% of 26 |
| Chicago, IL | 70% | 52% of 40 |
| Fort Worth, TX | 64% | 39% of 31 |
| Seattle, WA | 61% | 33% of 30 |
| Denver, CO | 57% | 50% of 50 |
| Baltimore, MD | 55% | 19% of 37 |
Los Angeles was highest, at 82%. Houston was 81%. Both are more than 8 in 10. Baltimore was lowest, at 55%. In every city, at least half of the Maps top 10 were not named.
Dallas left out 71% of its 38 shops with 4.5 stars or better and 100 or more reviews. Baltimore left out 19% of its 37.
In 82 of the 88 pairs, at least half were not named. Six pairs were under half: Baltimore roofing (20%), Baltimore dental (40%), Baltimore plumbing (40%), Denver dental (40%), Denver electrical (40%), and Seattle dental (40%).
The 8 trades
Each trade has 110 shops from the Maps top 10. The last column is 11 shops, the Maps number 1 in each city.
| Trade | Not named | 4.5 stars and 100+ reviews, not named | Maps number 1 not named |
|---|---|---|---|
| HVAC | 75% | 57% of 37 | 82% |
| Injury law | 73% | 58% of 57 | 45% |
| Plumbing | 73% | 52% of 58 | 64% |
| Electrical | 70% | 23% of 22 | 73% |
| Pest control | 70% | 44% of 32 | 55% |
| Med spa | 68% | 52% of 60 | 73% |
| Dental | 66% | 58% of 71 | 55% |
| Roofing | 66% | 41% of 39 | 64% |
HVAC was highest, at 75%. Injury law and plumbing were next, at 73%. Dental and roofing were lowest, at 66%.
The Maps number 1 HVAC shop was not named 82% of the time. Electrical shops with 4.5 stars or better and 100 or more reviews were not named 23% of the time. That group has only 22 shops.
ChatGPT and Gemini on their own
ChatGPT on its own skipped 76%. Gemini on its own skipped 80%. In our Oct 2026 test of 12 AI answers per city and trade, the 70% count needs all 12 answers to skip the shop.
What this means for your AI search visibility
A Maps rank does not mean ChatGPT or Gemini will say your name. In our Oct 2026 test of 12 AI answers per city and trade, 7 in 10 top Maps shops were never named. The safe way to say it is 6 in 10 or more.
Keep your name, phone, hours, and services the same in every place. Fill in your Google Business Profile. Keep your website complete. Ask happy customers for reviews. Make the other listings match too.
These steps do not force a tool to name you. No one can promise that. No one can promise you will be first. The names can change the next time someone asks.
The plain steps are in How to get my business on ChatGPT.
How we did it, and the limits
The name match is automatic. It can miss a short name. It can miss a long Maps title too, even when the answer said the shop. The looser match is 61%, not 70%. The true number is likely 61% to 71%, or 6 to 7 in 10.
This was one run on one day, Oct 21, 2026. AI answers change from day to day. In earlier tests, the same question a few hours later shared only about a third of the shops. This post is that one run. It is not a monthly count. We do not turn it into a rank.
Each pair had 12 answers. One pair can swing by 10 to 20 points. City and trade totals are steadier, by about 5 to 10 points.
We asked from a US-wide setting, not from inside each city. Google Maps used the city as its place.
Some Maps top 10 shops have few reviews. That can push the not-named percent up. That is why the tables also show shops with 4.5 stars or better and 100 or more reviews.
HVAC, roofing, and dental used an older set of questions. The other five trades used a newer set. The state was in every question.
